Happy Chinese New Year! The year of the Boar!

Why red and fireworks? It was believed in ancient times that a man eating beast would descend from the mountains and sneak into homes and eat the occupants. They call this monster the Nian. Soon they figured out that the Nian was afraid of loud noises and did not like the color red. These ideas led into the first of the New Year celebrations in China. The Chinese custom is also that you clean the home really well (like Spring cleaning) and celebrate a wonderful meal with all your family, usually at the most senor member of the family’s house. Many Chinese return to China this time of year for reunions. Red envelopes are given to the junior members of the family with and even amount of money in them. Sweeping on New Years is thought to sweep out your luck, but opening the windows will let luck in.

This is the year of the boar. I was born in the year of the dog. Here is what Wikipedia says about the dog (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_%28zodiac%29 )

Like his animal namesake, he is Loyal with a capital “L”. He is the one who people are most likely to turn to when they need help. The dog person will come through every time. That is because he/she is sensitive to others and empathizes with them, particularly if someone has suffered an injustice; he/she reacts quickly with the same feeling as though he/she had been personally offended. Friends know that they can rely upon their Dog friend to keep a promise or remain cool in a crisis.

Dog types are honest, intelligent and straightforward. They will take on any responsibility that is given to them and you can be sure that they will do their job well.

People born in this year tend to be difficult, upset and shocked more often than the other signs. (Who me?!?)

The dog is loyal, unselfish, and idealistic. They can sometimes be worriers and overly critical. Dogs go best with tigers and horses. Their friends are other dogs, tigers, horses and rabbits. Dogs get along worst with Dragons, whom they perceive as arrogant and all flash with no substance.

I have no idea if this sounds like me or not, but it is kinda cool.

Happy New Year!!!!!!
